(Bloomberg) — Russia launched multiple drone and missile strikes on Ukraine as the latest peace attempts by U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to be floundering.
Trump’s decision to call off the summit came after US secretary of state Marco Rubio and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone on Monday. Lavrov rejected Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire on Tuesday, saying it contradicted understandings reached at the summit with Putin in Alaska in August.
Trump wants Russia and Ukraine to freeze the war on the current battlelines, with Moscow holding a huge swathe of eastern Ukraine.
European nations are working with Ukraine on a new proposal for a ceasefire in Russia's war along current battle lines, four European diplomats said, mainly incorporating ideas already under discussion while pressing to keep the U.
