A quiet, dry day is in store for the Chicago area Thursday, but things will start to change overnight as lake effect snow begins to build in western Michigan, leading to a "prolonged" period of snow for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Friday and Saturday.

The Chicago area is going to see slightly warmer conditions on Sunday, but increasing clouds and light snow are also in the forecast. The day started out on the chilly side, with low temperatures in the single-digits and low-teens across the area.
