San Francisco’s Upper Great Highway has closed to cars and is now a park. In November’s election, the majority of San Francisco voters approved a measure to remove cars from the highway and transform it into a park.

Drivers took their final drive along Great Highway in San Francisco Thursday, ahead of its permanent closure to cars. The roadway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard is set to become a park after a measure was approved by voters.

Thursday marked the last full day that vehicles were allowed to drive on San Francisco's Upper Great Highway. The road permanently closed to traffic at 5 a.m. Friday in the first major step of creating an oceanfront park authorized by voters in November.
