If you were struggling to connect to your work apps, you aren't alone - Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a major outage. After an issue in one of its US regions overnight, users were unable to access services such as Zoom, Slack and Canva - all of which run on AWS systems - before the issue spread to the US.
According to the online outage tracker Downdetector, dozens of popular platforms began experiencing issues around 1:30 a.m. Central Time. Affected services included gaming platforms like Roblox and PlayStation,
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has confirmed it is tracking a massive issue that has rendered large parts of the internet unusable. AWS says it has identified and fixed the main issue causing the disruption, but it could be some time before all affected services are back to normal.
A United system outage caused by the AWS crash also reportedly caused long lines and disrupted check-ins and bag drop-offs across airports in the United States, according to the airline’s own X posts in response to customer complaints. The outage is yet to lead to massive delays, but Delta reported facing some minor ones.
It wasn’t a hack, but instead it had a Domain Name System or DNS error that occurred at AWS’s US-EAST-1 location in northern Virginia.
“The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now,” the company said in a statement. There may be some issues as websites work through backlogs that occurred during the glitch.
