The National Hurricane Center's 4 p.m. Tuesday advisory reported that Category 5 Hurricane Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 40 miles southeast of Negril Jamaica and 235 miles southwest of Guantanamo Cuba. With maximum sustained winds of 185 mph, the hurricane is moving to the north-northeast at 9 mph.
Jamaica's central location in the Caribbean, the island has never recorded a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, according to records from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) dating back to 1850.
Today, Today, there were numerous changes. Melissa developed into hurricane, before turning into a Category 5 hurricane. Then, it weakened to a Category 4 hurricane and was later downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph.
