After more than two years in captivity, the last 20 hostages abducted during Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, have been released.
The last 20 living hostages released by Hamas are beginning a difficult path to recovery that will include rebuilding a sense of control over their lives and following a carefully supervised diet.
Palestinian militants have so far released the remains of 15 hostages that were held in Gaza for the past two years as part of the ceasefire agreement in the Israel-Hamas war. Hamas says it has not been able to reach all of the remains because they are buried under rubble left behind by Israel’s two-year offensive in the Gaza Strip.
World leaders from more than 20 nations gathered in Egypt to formally sign the agreement, which Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called "the birth of a glimmer of hope" for the region.
The remaining 20 hostages still alive were released Monday, alongside nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees and prisoners.
Both presidents brokered deals that resulted in Hamas releasing people it took captive during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced early Wednesday morning that the bodies of hostages Arie (Zalman) Zalmanowicz and Tamir Adar had been returned by Hamas to Israel and positively identified.
Some former captives have been sent home from the hospital. But a doctor said they all had “endured untold adversity,” as details emerge of their time in Gaza’s tunnels.
