Three people died from floodwater in McDowell County, County Commissioner Michael Brooks confirmed in a livestreamed news conference Tuesday.

More details were released about the three people who died in the McDowell County floods. According to the West Virginia State Police, on Monday, February 17, 2025,

West Virginia State Police have confirmed that the person killed in the flood this weekend is from McDowell County. Troopers said the man was in a vehicle that was washed away by high water. His body was found in the Tug River Monday. His name has not been released.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A second individual who died in the weekend flooding in McDowell County has been found. Governor Patrick Morrisey identified the two victims who were recovered on back-to-back days as Donald and Debbie Griffin of Welch.

MCDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) - There are multiple people missing in McDowell County after heavy downpours moved through the area Saturday night, causing major flooding. McDowell County Commissioner Michael Brooks confirmed to WVVA that there are several missing and unaccounted for across the county.

Buttonwood Park in Mercer County sustained damage in the flood. The boardwalk that is part of the 55-acre lake was washed away. More than five inches of rain fell in parts of McDowell County. Brooks said they knew it was going to rain but not as much as it did.

Efforts are under way to raise funds to help with flood recovery in McDowell County and the area. The United Way of Southern West Virginia is also helping. Executive Director Trena Decal said the organization has activated its Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to provide support to communities affected by the storm.
