No-see-ums get their name from the fact that these insects are so small, they often go unnoticed. They are essentially extremely small flies, typically measuring less than 1/8 inch in length.

It could be that the insects that thrive in cities are generalists, for instance, or that many of the insects are exotic, too. The study didn’t classify insects as native or not.
