When The Ship Comes In To Brownsville, Rip It Up Over the past two decades, the landlocked city of Brownsville, Texas, has become the hub of the U.S. ship recycling industry.

USS Barry was returning from a six-year deployment in Japan. The ship was commissioned in 1992, making it the Navy’s oldest missile destroyer, according to a press release.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Barry steamed out of Tokyo Bay on Friday, beginning a 17-day journey to the United States and concluding nearly seven years in the Indo-Pacific region.

USS Barry was deployed for six years in Yokosuka, Japan. It recently returned to the United States, and is now based out of Naval Station Everett to undergo routine maintenance.
