Largest federal workers union calls for an end to the shutdown, putting pressure on Democrats
In a new statement first shared with NBC News, the American Federation of Government Employees' president calls on Congress to pass a "clean continuing resolution."
"While Americans are struggling to make ends meet, federal workers are going without pay, and millions of families are bracing for soaring health care costs, the President is leaving the country," Schumer said in a statement. "America is shut down and the President is skipping town."
The American Federation of Government Employees is calling for a stopgap funding measure to bring employees back to work with back pay.
The Senate returns on Oct. 27, but questions remain about when the 13th vote towards ending the shutdown will occur.
