Hurricane melissa strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane Monday morning and forecasters warn more strengthening is possibe.

Will the 13th storm of the hurricane season be lucky and pass right over, or will it be the first to make landfall, potentially in Florida?

According to the hurricane center, Hurricane Melissa has a significant possibility of making landfall on Jamaica as a major hurricane and could maintain major hurricane strength when it reaches eastern Cuba. Forecasters say Melissa poses little to no risk for Florida and the U.S. at this time.

Life-threatening storm surge is becoming more likely along the south coast of Jamaica later in the weekend or early next week. Peak storm surge heights could reach 7 to 11 feet above ground level, near and to the east of where the center of Melissa makes landfall. This storm surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

Weather experts say if forecasts become less accurate, the public will lose faith in them — and residents will be less likely to heed warnings when their lives are in danger.
