‘Best interest’: Encampment outside Portland ICE facility removed by the city overnight
The protest camp outside Portland’s ICE facility was removed overnight, in a decision that Portland police said was “in the best interest of everyone involved.”
A local advocacy group fighting for the rights of Portland immigrants is making a major move, right across the street from the ICE facility in South Portland.
As Portland anticipated a 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for the 9th Circuit Court’s judges to decide whether to reconsider federal deployment of Oregon National Guard troops to the city, a festive mood returned Monday outside the city’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building that has been at the center of protests since June.
The woman said she took photos of suspected unmarked ICE vehicles after being alerted by a Facebook group that federal agents might be in the area.

For the past several months, the Trump administration — along with conservative journalists and social media influencers — have repeatedly claimed Portland’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement building is under siege by “rioters” and that “riots” are a common occurrence at the site on the South Waterfront. But the facts don’t bear that out.
