Nine-O-Nine, the vintage plane that crashed Wednesday while carrying aviation enthusiasts in Connecticut, was among 13,000 B-17 bombers produced in the buildup to and during World War II.

The bomber, operated by the nonprofit Collings Foundation, was last inspected in January, the NTSB said. There are 16 B-17Gs currently registered in the U.S., including the one that just crashed.
