Imported Canadian beef products distributed in Washington may be contaminated with E. coli according to a Public Health Alert the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today.

Last September, the bipartisan American Beef Labeling Act was introduced in the Senate and, if it passes, it would reinstate Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (M-COOL) for beef.

About 297,715 pounds of canned corned beef was imported and distributed nationwide without being re-inspected by the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service, the agency announced Monday night.

The FSIS said the beef was imported from Ontario and sold by the Ryding Regency meat Packers Ltd. The department said most of the affected products were produced on May 27 and May 30, 2019.
