NEW YORK -- Away from the crowds of the New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square, New York City typically rings in the new year with fireworks displays from Central Park to Coney Island.

A new study by an international team of scientists finds that the effects of fireworks shows affect more birds than previously thought, and are experienced by birds as far away as 10 km (6.2 miles).
