NASA has announced a new wave of layoffs at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as the agency undergoes a sweeping "realignment" of its workforce.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory laid off 550 employees Tuesday, reducing the La Cañada Flintridge facility’s workforce by more than 10%. The cuts are part of a downsizing that has reduced JPL’s staff by roughly one-third over two years.

More layoffs are hitting JPL, the NASA research lab near Pasadena. People will begin getting their notices on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The job cuts are part of an effort to “restructure” the Jet Propulsion Lab, the lab’s director said in a statement.
