“It does surprise us, though the reach of mass shootings is pretty extensive. For instance, about 1 in 11,000 American adults were on the scene of the Harvest 91 shooting in Las Vegas. That’s obviously an extreme example, but illustrates how direct exposure can balloon to 7 percent,” Pyrooz told ZME Science.

The group defined “mass shooting” as a gun-related crime where four or more people were shot in a public space.

Overall, 6.95 percent of U.S. adults report being present at the scene of a mass shooting, and 2.18 percent sustained physical injuries during these incidences, according to a study published online March 7 in JAMA Network Open.
