The Johns Hopkins University said on Thursday it will slash over 2,000 jobs in the U.S. and abroad after the administration of President Donald Trump terminated $800 million in grants to the renowned academic institution.

The cuts at the university’s global health affiliate, medical school and public-health school follow loss of $800 million in USAID grants.

Johns Hopkins University announced Thursday that it will be cutting more than 2,000 jobs after it lost $800 million in funding from the US Agency for International Development amid the Trump administration’s effort to significantly downsize the federal government.

More than 2,000 positions related to global health are being cut from the Johns Hopkins University after the Baltimore institution saw $800 million in federal grants disappear, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday.

Local and international health research efforts are already winding down as the university braces for even more potential cuts.

In a letter​ sent out Monday, the Education Department warned 60 colleges, including Johns Hopkins University, that they could lose federal funding if they fail to make campuses safe for Jewish students.

In a statement released Thursday, Johns Hopkins University confirmed the loss of thousands of positions internationally.

The layoffs will impact the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the university’s medical school, and Jhpiego, a non-profit organisation affiliated with Johns Hopkins that focuses on international health initiatives.
