OSIRIS-REx was the first United States spacecraft to return samples from an asteroid. Previous asteroid returns include the Japanese probes Hayabusa, which visited 25143 Itokawa in 2010, and Hayabusa2, which visited 162173 Ryugu in June 2018.

On Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023 the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer) spacecraft capped its 7-year mission with the successful deposit of a pristine sample of surface material from the asteroid Bennu in the Utah desert.

OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security--Regolith Explorer) launched September 8, 2016. It explored the Near Earth Asteroid (101955) Bennu in detail including with the Goddard-built OVIRS instrument.

We set out to collect material from the dawn of the solar system – a “first” in United States history. As we celebrate a triumphant close to a seven-year quest, we begin OSIRIS-APEX, our next mission to asteroid Apophis. Space is Wildcat Country. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

2023年9月22日 · Four aircraft and teams at three ground sites will track the capsule’s trajectory on its way to the surface, using imaging and spectroscopy instruments. Data from the project, called Hypervelocity OSIRIS-REx Reentry Imaging & Spectroscopy (HORIS), will be used to validate and develop planetary entry models.
