The U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) is EPA's tool for communicating about outdoor air quality and health. The AQI includes six color-coded categories, each corresponding to a range of index values.

It uses color-coded categories and provides statements for each category that tell you about air quality in your area, which groups of people may be affected, and steps you can take to reduce your exposure to air pollution.

Here's how the Air Quality Flag Program works: each day your organization raises a flag that corresponds to how clean or polluted the air is. The color of the flag matches EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI): green, yellow, orange, red, and purple.

Make an air strip yourself. Use this strip to show the students how their finished products should look, then use it as a control in step 4 for comparison with the test strips exposed to the air for 1 week. NOTE: Each student should make at least one air strip, more if there is time.

Participants will share their experience and ideas for meeting challenges with new air quality monitoring technology, updated data analysis, air quality forecasting, air quality and health, and outreach and communicating air quality to the public.

What is the AQI? The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or unhealthy your air is, and what associ-ated health efects might be a concern. The AQI focuses on health efects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing unhealthy air.
