2017年11月2日 · What is Japan’s Miyajima (Deer) Island? Essentially as the title suggests, it’s an island full of deer. Japan’s Miyajima Island is most renown for it’s abundance of tame deer, the floating Itsukushima Shrine and of course, the giant orange Torii Gate which sits in front of Itsukushima Shrine.

There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths. Unlike in Nara, the deer on Miyajima must not be fed.

2024年5月17日 · I was not expecting to be immediately greeted by local deer when arriving on Miyajima Island. It’s similar to Nara Japan, where deers roam free, and have for centuries. The deer walk freely through the streets as a pedestrian would, this is their home too after all.

Miyajima only has a population of around 2,000 people, plus some free-roaming deer. Itsukushima-jinja and the floating gate are listed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. There are several other shrines and temples on the island.
