Our selection is drawn from the major Old English poem Beowulf. It is the only surviving heroic epic of its era, and the lone early manuscript dates from ca. 1000 A.D. The date of the poem's composition is uncertain, but probably lies in the 7th or 8th century on the basis of its language.

Through Scyld, the poem establishes strength and loyalty as traits of a good king. The orphan Scyld parallels Beowulf, who was an unimpressive child. Scyld has a son Beow, who accomplishes many glorious deeds and wins the loyalty of his fellow men through his great generosity. Beow is a warrior who finds fame. Generosity makes him a good king.

Through industry, courage, and character, Scyld Scefing became a great leader and honored king. His son, Beow (sometimes called Beowulf but not to be confused with the epic's central hero), continued the successful reign after Scyld's death and sea burial. The epic opens with the story of Scyld, mighty king of the Spear-Danes, in honor of whom they are often called Scyldings. He is the great-grandfather of Hrothgar, who later plays a prominent part in the poem. To Scyld is born a son, who receives the name of Beowulf— a name afterwards made famous by the hero of the poem.
