BLENDING PRACTICE with CVC words. A key component to learning how to read is BLENDING! If a child cannot blend (blend individual sounds together to read the word) they will not be able to read. At first, children say each sound and then blend to read the word. To make children into fluent readers, they need a lot of blending practice as the aim is that they will be able to read words by sight. Practising with word families like this is a great support to building up reading speed and confidence.

Are your students struggling with reading CVC words? Maybe they can say each sound, but then aren’t able to blend them together? Or maybe they are only hearing the last part of the word? If any of those things are true, you should try successive blending! This is where students only blend 2 sounds at a time. This allows them to hear the word so much better!
