We went to Saltwick Bay to look for fossils, shipwrecks, and explore the dramatic cliffs. It’s only a short drive or walk from Whitby, but it feels completely different. 🌊❤️ The coastline is rugged, the skies are wide, and the scenery is stunning. You’ll also find one of the most photographed shipwrecks on the Yorkshire coast. The bay is quiet, a little wild, and has a haunting beauty. There are rock pools to explore, fresh sea air, and plenty of space to relax. Be sure to check the tide times

The sea potato, also known as the common heart urchin (Echinocardium cordatum), is a burrowing marine animal found in sandy seabeds. When alive, it is covered in fine, hair-like spines. Over time, these creatures can fossilise, and their delicate shells turn into the beautiful heart-shaped fossils we sometimes find today along our coastal limestone cliffs — a reminder that these rocks were once part of the seabed. Here are some golden pyritic rocks that we found and opened up on the beach🏝🌊 The slabs had been part of a huge landslide which had revealed some material perfect for containing Jurassic fossils.
